Laminate Flooring

Laminate is the most popular choice for UK homeowners who want the look of wood at a practical price. Modern laminate uses a high-definition photographic layer beneath a tough wear coating, with results that are increasingly hard to distinguish from real wood. It is available in a wide range of plank widths, lengths and finishes.

A professional fitting makes all the difference. Your fitter will check and prepare the subfloor, lay the correct underlay, cut around doorframes and obstacles, and finish with quality beading or Scotia to complete the edges. Most rooms can be fitted in a day.

What’s involved

  • ✓ Subfloor inspection and preparation
  • ✓ Underlay selection and installation
  • ✓ Laminate fitting with click or glue system
  • ✓ Cutting around architraves and obstacles
  • ✓ Edge beading or Scotia to all skirting boards
  • ✓ Furniture removal and replacement (on request)

Typical costs

£20–£40 per m² supply and fitted, depending on the product range and underlay chosen. A typical 20m² living room costs £400–£800 all in.

Prices vary by region, subfloor condition and product choice. Compare 3 quotes for the most accurate price for your specific job.

FAQs — Laminate Flooring

Can laminate be fitted in a kitchen or bathroom?
Water-resistant laminate is suitable for kitchens if properly fitted with sealed joints. Standard laminate is not recommended for bathrooms. For wet areas, LVT is the safer choice.
Does laminate need underlay?
Yes. Underlay provides cushioning, reduces impact noise and — for ground floor installations — acts as a moisture barrier. Some laminate has underlay pre-attached; your fitter will advise.
How long does laminate flooring last?
A good quality laminate, properly fitted and maintained, typically lasts 10–20 years. AC4 or AC5 rated products are more suitable for busy hallways and kitchens.
Can laminate go over underfloor heating?
Some laminate products are compatible with underfloor heating — check the manufacturer specification. The surface temperature must not exceed 27°C and the product must be rated for UFH use.
How much does laminate fitting cost?
Expect to pay £20–£40 per m² supply and fitted for a mid-range product. Getting 3 quotes lets you compare prices and choose the best value for your job.
