Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood combines a genuine hardwood veneer with a dimensionally stable plywood or HDF core. The result is a floor that looks and feels like solid wood but performs far better in the UK climate, where seasonal humidity changes can cause solid wood to move significantly. Engineered wood can be laid as a floating floor, glued down, or secret-nailed.

It is suitable for installation over underfloor heating, on concrete subfloors and in open-plan spaces requiring wide boards. Herringbone and chevron patterns have grown in popularity and require careful planning and skilled fitting to achieve perfectly aligned results.

What’s involved

  • ✓ Subfloor moisture testing and preparation
  • ✓ Acclimatisation of boards (48–72 hours)
  • ✓ Underlay or adhesive selection
  • ✓ Fitting: floating, glue-down or secret-nail
  • ✓ Pattern layout for herringbone or chevron
  • ✓ Finishing, threshold strips and skirting beading

Typical costs

£45–£90 per m² supply and fitted, depending on wood species, board width and pattern. Herringbone and chevron patterns cost more due to additional labour and material waste.

Prices vary by region, subfloor condition and product choice. Compare 3 quotes for the most accurate price for your specific job.

FAQs — Engineered Wood Flooring

What is the difference between engineered and solid wood flooring?
Solid wood is a single piece of timber. Engineered wood has a real wood veneer bonded to a stable plywood core. Engineered wood moves less with seasonal humidity changes, can go over underfloor heating, and suits wider boards and ground floor installation.
Can engineered wood be sanded and refinished?
Yes, usually 2–3 times depending on the veneer thickness. A thicker veneer (4mm+) allows more sanding over the floor’s lifetime.
Can engineered wood go over underfloor heating?
Yes — it is one of its key advantages over solid wood. Check that the product is rated for UFH and that the maximum surface temperature does not exceed 27°C.
How long does engineered wood take to acclimatise?
Typically 48–72 hours in the room where it will be fitted. The boards should be stored flat, not upright, and the room should be at normal living temperature.
How much does engineered wood fitting cost?
Typically £45–£90 per m² supply and fitted. Herringbone and chevron patterns cost more. Compare 3 quotes to get the best price for your specific job.
