Kitchen flooring needs to be waterproof, hard-wearing and comfortable to stand on. Here are the five best options for UK kitchens.
1. LVT / Luxury vinyl plank
Best all-rounder. Fully waterproof, warm underfoot, quiet, and available in dozens of wood and stone effects. Expect to pay £25–£50 per m² fitted. Ideal for families and busy kitchens.
2. Porcelain or ceramic tiles
Most durable. Tiles will not scratch, stain or absorb moisture. The main downsides are that they are cold and hard underfoot, and grout lines require maintenance. Cost: £30–£70 per m² fitted.
3. Vinyl sheet flooring
Best budget option. Seamless (no joints for water to enter), soft underfoot and very cost-effective — from £15–£30 per m² fitted. Not as premium-looking as LVT but performs well in practical terms.
4. Engineered wood
Premium look. Engineered wood can be used in kitchens if properly sealed around edges. Warmer and more comfortable than tiles. Cost: £50–£90 per m² fitted. Requires more care around water than LVT.
5. Laminate
Budget wood look — with caveats. Water-resistant laminate can work in lower-risk areas, but avoid standard laminate near sinks and dishwashers. If you use laminate, choose a genuine water-resistant core and seal all joints.
Our recommendation
For most UK kitchens, LVT is the best combination of practical performance and appearance. If budget allows, engineered wood looks excellent. For the tightest budgets, cushioned vinyl sheet is hard to beat on value.
